Young Astronomers and the Telescopio Nazionale Galileo
The Telescopio Nazionale Galileo (TNG) is proud to announce in collaboration with the Ministero dell'Istruzione e del Merito (MIM), the Società Astronomica Italiana (SAIt) and Istituto Nazionale di Astrofisica (INAF), the First Edition of the competition reserved to Italian students: "Young Astronomers and Telescopio Nazionale Galileo".
The competition is open to students (15-17 years old) attending Italian high schools with the aim of promote their scientific and technological potentials and give them the opportunity to grow from the scientific point of view.
Students have to prepare an observational proposal to be carried out during a 6-day internship at Telescopio Nazionale Galileo.
The proposal should include either photometric or spectroscopic observations connected to a specific scientific problem or selected among the following ones:
- Selection of some star systems, also using the Gaia catalogue, to carry out deep and accurate multiband photometry. These images will be used to obtain a Color-Magnitude Diagram with the aim of estimating the absolute age of the system;
- Selection of a template of variable stars for multiband photometry with the aim of determining the distances;
- Selection of a stellar system or field of stars to determine the abundance of the chemical elements;
- Characterization of an extra-solar planet using the radial velocity method.
