THE CALAR ALTO SCHMIDT-LEMAITRE TELESCOPE: STATUS AND PERSPECTIVES

Speaker: Francisco Prada (Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía CSIC, Granada)

Date and time: 2019-08-27 12:30

I will give an overview of the CASTLE (The Calar Alto Schmidt-Lemaitre Telescope) project that aims to building a fully reflective Schmidt telescope with a large field-of-view of 4 sq. deg. at the Calar Alto Observatory. CASTLE will be testing and commissioning the first telescope that uses curved detectors for astronomical applications. It will unveil the ultra-low surface brightness universe thanks to its large FoV and unique optical performance, and its robotic capability will provide a great potential to discover gravitational waves electromagnetic counterparts and fast radio bursts. CASTLE is led by the Laboratoire d'Astrophysique de Marseille in collaboration with the Instituto de Astrofísica de Andalucía (CSIC).
