Neutral gas kinematics in Luminous and Ultra-Luminous Infrared Galaxies

The properties of interstellar absorption lines can directly probe the neutral phase of outflowing gas in galaxies. Furthermore, the absorption line measurements of winds in nearby starbursts are clearly needed to provide the best constraints on dynamical models of outflows locally and to make direct comparisons to high redshift outflows. Neutral gas outflows have been detected in many Luminous and Ultra-Luminous Indisfrared Galaxies ([U]LIRGs) via the NaI D 5890, 5896 absorption-line doublet. Because of the low ionization potential of Sodium, this doublet feature probes the neutral gas. Using the IFU on VIMOS (VLT) it is possible to analyze and to map the 2-D kinematics of cool neutral outflows in [U]LIRGs. We used the Penalized Pixel Fitting methods (pPXF) to extract line-of-sight velocity distributions in a sample of low redshift LIRGs-[U]LIRGs. A brief overview of [U]LIRGs and galactic winds, the sample and some preliminary results are presented in this talk. A detailed analysis of these data will be presented in future talks and papers.
